BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A witness testified yesterday (Thursday)
that Maurice McCarty clipped a photo of a slain UAB student from a
newspaper, taped it inside a shoe box and bragged "This is my
first kill."
Kernisha Hughes testified at a preliminary hearing for the
19-year-old McCarty and two other defendants charged with capital
murder in the October 8th shooting death of UAB student Kayla
Fanaei.
Also charged are 19-year-old Alfred Marina and 21-year-old
Gregory Hill. After the three-hour hearing, a district judge ruled
there was sufficient evidence against the three defendants to send
the case to a grand jury for possible indictments.
Hughes also testified that Marina told her that he and McCarty
approached Fanaei's car in the parking lot of Glen Iris Elementary
School pretending to ask for directions, then returned with a gun
to rob her.
The defendants were arrested more than two months after Fanaei
was killed when Hughes and one of her sisters came forward with
statements they said the defendants made about the case.
