PHOENIX (AP) - A federal panel has voted to rename an Arizona
mountain to honor a soldier killed in Iraq.
The Phoenix mountain will now be called Piestewa Peak.
Army Specialist Lori Piestewa was the first American Indian
woman to die in combat while serving in the U.S. military. The
23-year-old mother of two died in a 2003 ambush after her convoy
took a wrong turn. Her best friend, Jessica Lynch, was taken
prisoner and was later rescued.
The state had previously voted to rename the peak in Piestewa's
honor. Today's vote by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names makes the
change official.
The popular hiking spot was formerly known as Squaw Peak -- a
name many American Indians found offensive.
