The Mobile County School Board officially approved teacher cuts at its meeting Monday night.
Right after the meeting, the list of eliminated positions was released.
The board voted 5-0 to approve Superintendent Roy Nichols' plan for budget cuts and other moves to get the system on the road to having the savings required by state law.
Jennifer Rowe and Holly Spavey attended the meeting to see if they would have jobs.
They are third year non-tenured teachers in special education and speech therapy.
When asked what the waiting has been like, Rowe said, "Its awful, its awful. She (Spavey) has three young children four years old and under. I have two four years old and under and its awful for our families. My husband is a police officer and we just don't know what we're going to do if I don't have a job."
When asked what if she thought about what was going to happen in the future, Spavey said, "We'll have to figure it out."
Superintendent Nichols said, "492 total employees would be terminated. The classified employees that received notification of non-renewal almost assuredly will not be coming back. The certified employees, the teachers, many of them, will be coming back as per usual."
After the board meeting, Rowe and Spavey checked the list to see if they would be cut.
Both found out they were on the list to get pink slips.
Board members say they hope many teachers will be re-hired once the state education budget is finalized.

What make me so mad is that Mr. Megginson was at our school last friday and one our teachers told him in front of all the 5th grade students and parents how important our special education teachers are. We know how important he thinks they are. Will not get my vote again!

I did’nt see any school board members on that list! They should have been the first to go. They do not teach our children-oops they do- How to mismanage money! All the teachers need to get up and walk out. Then see how the school board would manage all the children during the week.

I am a parent at Gilliard Elem and just found out my child’s teacher will be getting her pink slip.  I am very upset especially since another teacher has only been there for one year and she gets to stay.  I guess having your father on the School Board helps.  Tell me the how fair is this.

I say divide the school system in to two seperate systems. North Mobile County School System and South Mobile County School System. Run both independently. Have two School Boards and two budgets. Manage both administrations seperately.

The problem with the whole deal now is that the current system has out grown itself. Kinda like trying to manage five Walmart stores with one store manager under one roof.

History is going in that direction. The new Saraland School System is a good example. Pretty soon other municipalities will follow. I think it is silly to keep on with bad buisness as usual when a division is justified and makes good cents$$$$$.

I’m a bit curious about the list myself.  I see quite a few positions are listed withinin athletic departments, bands, department heads, etc.  Are those employees receiving terminations, cut-backs in their stipends, or what?

That would be awesome if every teacher stood together and just said enough already! Then they would be forced to do something… and maybe get a raise in the process

I say Private School!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who in their right mind would want to work for an employer that is going to let you go each spring and might hire you back in the fall?  To all the teachers that lost their jobs I am sorry and please move to Baldwin County, Mississippi, or Florida.  At least there you might get to keep your job long term.  Maybe if Mobile gets to the point where no teachers will work here someone will actually do something about the School Board.

This is a great example of why my brother moved out of this county to teach and why my sister drives across the state line everyday to teach.  The school board can rest assured that when I have children old enough to start attending schools, we will be moving out of state.

I don’t understand this list-there are teachers on there that I know should be tenured. Are they cutting out the extra stipend they get for coaching, as it appears most of these cuts are sports related, or are they letting their regular position go too? I know the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic are the most important, but I think the extra-curricular activities have a place also.

Why not sell QMS and use the old Shaw for free? What would the savings be on that? Or is it not a nice enough building for our elite school board?
