The show's host Ty Pennington showed up at their door Friday morning bringing the good news.
In seven days, a team of designers, volunteers, and workers will tear down the family's old home and build a new one.
The Gaudet's home was slowly deteriorating and was battered by Hurricane Katrina along with a small house fire.
Eight people lived in the small home.
Five families from Alabama were nominated.
Lydia Gaudet crossed her fingers that hers would be picked.
"When we heard we'd been nominated, my heart just leaped because I just had so much hoped that it might really happen and of course as the process gone on, it was just very nerve wracking because you don't know, because you really don't know if you're going to get it or not," said Exteme Makeover: Home Edition Recipient Lydia Gaudet of Mobile.
The family should be able to see their new home next week.
As a bonus, the television show flew them to Arizona to see this Sunday's Superbowl.

To the EHM team, ABC and the Gaudet Family:

Luke 6:38 (New King James Version)

38) Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

I also live in the neighborhood only a few houses away. It has been quite chaotic but I understand the cause and realize it is only for a short time. Most of the staff has been cordial but there are always a few bad apples in every bunch. I am a big fan of the show and love that they are in Mobile helping. I also can see both sides of the argument here as i have almost been run off the road by a member of the Gaudet family on 2 occasions as I walk in the neighborhood. I have also noticed some of the unfriendliness of the family that another mentioned on the site. Maybe this experience will be of benefit to everyone involved as a lesson to value others.

I was one of the workmen on the job, Tuesday, Feb 05. It was quite chaotic, there were probably 20 sheetrock hangers and finishers in the home.  We started about 6 a.m., and were rolling up at 9:30, (hanging). When I left the job, the finishers were putting on their 2nd coat of mud, by the time I got home (90 minute drive), the painters were working.

I say it was chaotic, but in an orderly way. There were 3 different crews; I was part of an 8 man crew. We divided the home into 3 sections, and each crew took off. Let me tell you: we were slinging some sheetrock!!!

There were probably 200 people on the job, including security, production, catering, etc. Especially helpful were all the community volunteers. I wish to thank each and every person who helped us; unloading/reloading tools, carrying off scrap material, serving breakfast, I don’t have enough room to truly express my thanks to all who helped.

I wish to say I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

I too live in this area and can certainly see where some people would be a little frustrated with the chaos.  I suggest to everyone, instead of becoming a “victim”, become a volunteer.  There are so many wonderful people in these neighborhoods that you may otherwise never know.  Just look at it this way, if we can handle the traffic for two schools in the mornings and afternoons, then this should be easy.  This is only one week as opposed to year-round, and it is for a family that (from what I’ve heard) works hard for this community.

I have been working at the house 11 hours today and I can tell you that it has been such a pleasure to be there.  The builders, designers, production crew, workers, most everyone has been as friendly and helpful as they can be.  It is my opinion that then only problems down at the site are spectators and workers becoming star struck and trying to get pics and autographs.  Everyone has to understand that it is extremely hard to get a house up as quick as they have and the people who are there to work are there to WORK!  There are so many things that must happen before Friday’s reveal and they don’t really need to be bothered unless they approach you (and they do).  I do have to say thank you to all of the neighbors who are coming out to help work and those who are allowing the inconviences to happen.  I was truely amazed when I saw the set up on Sun.  I believe this family and this community can handle a little inconvience.  Everyone is effected by this event!

I can’t tell you what a blessing this is for the Gaudet family… I have known this family all my life.  I went to school with their oldest daughter and my mother still remains very close to Mrs. Gaudet.  This family is wonderful to say the least.  I know that they have endured so many struggles over the years and they always seem to have a positive outlook on life, God, love, and family. Thank you to all of the neighbors and volunteers, this wouldn’t be possible without YOU!!!  And of course, a very BIG thank you to ABC and EHM… God Bless!

yo daddy
It seems that you may be starting to get a little more mature about this. Maybe by Friday all will be well and you can enjoy this once in a lifetime thing.
I do hope you clarify some of the remarks you have made.

Let me make this point clear, I have not tried to interfere in any way with this project.  I HAVE NOT IN ANY WAY.

I have simply vented my frustration...and at the time I did, I was extremely angry with the way I was treated in my neighborhood.  I should not have veered off course about the family, I am person enough to admit that.  After calming down and reading my statements, I realize I should have stuck to the subject, which was the show itself, not the fact of the family receiving the house.

At the time, however, I was extremely upset.  I did not realize the magnitude of how the show was going to engross the neighborhood and was extremely disappointed in how I was treated by the staff.  I have not embellished my experience regarding that.

Although scenegirl was not quite as kind as sunflower, your points are both taken.

Good night.

yo daddy, no that was not a threat. I was just trying to let you know you have to live next to them. And they will know what you said. As well as many others who know which house you are. You are making this hard on yourself by saying you do not like these people. I am wondering if you are a adult or a child that lives in this house.  If you are a child I do not think your parents will like it when they see what you wrote.
You are very bitter and yes you do have the freedom of speech, but if you do not use wisdom it will come back to bite you in the butt.
