Mobile's Shaw High and Prichard's Glendale Elementary will close at the end of the school year.
Board members decided to close Shaw several years ago -- but they made it official during a special called meeting Monday afternoon.
Since the school is still in good shape, members have to decide what do with the building once it's empty.
Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols said a committee has been tossing around at least ten ideas about what to do with the building.
He says when he narrows them down, he will present the ideas to the board.
The school board also voted to close Glendale Elementary in Prichard.
The students will be split between two other elementary schools.
Students with Prichard addresses will go to Grant Elementary.
Students with Mobile addresses will go to Howard Elementary.
If parents aren't happy with those choices they can apply for a transfer.

School Board Race Getting Ugly

Shaw High School should have been closed years ago due to the number of students attending. On the news tonight they stated Shaw only had ten students, thats alot of money to keep a school open just for ten kids.Could this be the reason why the school system is in such sad shape?Since there were only ten kids did they receive more one on one learning time. And with that small number of students,I am guessing they are all honor roll students.I would like to know how much the school board is paying to use the Mitchell Center for the ten students to graduate? If money is needed for the service of the Mitchell Center,I am sorry but it seems to be a waste for just ten students. The gym at Shaw is large enough. Now please do not take all this the wrong way.I am glad that these kids are all graduating. But the fact of the matter is with the school board always complaining of money issues why spend all that money for ten kids when the money could have been divided between all schools.
