MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - One of the more familiar images of Lauren Burk was one with twinkling eyes, a broad, beaming smile and an arm thrown around a friend.Hundreds put their arms around each other at today's memorial service for the slain Auburn University freshman in her hometown of Marietta, Georgia, today.
Many attending the service were Burk's peers, a testament to the lives she had touched in her 18 years. Several of those closest to her spoke during the service. They included her boyfriend of 2 years and her best friend, who met Burk in third grade.
There'll be another service in Marietta tomorrow, and Auburn University in Alabama will hold a campus-wide memorial service in her honor on Monday.
Police in Phenix City, Alabama, have arrested 23-year-old Courtney Lockhart. He's been charged with her murder, along with kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape. Authorities say Burk was not sexually assaulted.
