Mayer Mitchell passed away Wednesday morning.
He was a real-estate developer who helped construct many of the buildings, apartment complexes and shopping centers in Mobile County.
He's best known for his huge contributions to the University of South Alabama.
The sports complex and the college of business bear his family's name.
Mitchell helped contribute more than $36 million to the USA's new cancer institute.
University of South Alabama President Gordon Moulton says he and Mitchell had been friends for 35 years and said Mitchell will be missed for always putting others first.
"He made it clear that it was apart of who he was and also apart of of his faith that you give back while you're living and that way you have some sense of involvement while you're doing it. And also, he said if you give when you're living that's gold, giving when you're dead he says is lead," said University of South Alabama President Gordon Moulton.
Mitchell was 74.
The University of South Alabama will hold a public tribute Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Mitchell Center located on Old Shell Road.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, (251-460-7032), HSB 2150, Mobile, AL 36688-0002; the Congregation Ahavas Chesed Synagogue, (251-343-6010), 705 Regents Way, Mobile, AL 36609; or the charity of your choice.
Condolences may be shared with the Mitchell family:
