A man fishing along Little Lagoon Pass in Gulf Shores drowned Tuesday evening. It appears he lost his balance when the sand below him gave way, causing him to stumble into the water and get pulled under by the strong current. Gulf Shores Fire Marshal Keith Martin says, other people fishing in the area told authorities they witnessed him going under and tried to rescue him but the water was too swift. Bystanders told searchers they never saw the man come back up. The Gulf Shores Police and Fire Departments used sonar on a state police boat to search for the man's body. After searching for nearly two hours his body was found washed ashore along the 1300 Block of West Beach Blvd in Gulf Shores around 9:30 Tuesday evening.
The man's name has not yet been released. Authorities are trying to confirm his identity and notify his family.
