Republican Governor Haley Barbour will appoint a successor to
serve until a special election is held next year.
Lott, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, announced November 26th that he would resign by year's end.
The 66-year-old said he wants to pursue another interests, but
he hasn't said what those are.
There's widespread speculation that Lott might enter the
lobbying business with one of his longtime friends, former Senator
John Breaux, a conservative Democrat from Louisiana.
