PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Senator Trent Lott says
he'll retire from the Senate by the end of the year.
The Senate's number-two Republican says it's not his health, and
that he feels fine. He says it's just time for him and his wife
"to do something else."
Lott says he leaves with "no anger, no malice." As for his 16
years in the House and 19 in the Senate, he describes his time on
Capitol Hill as "a wild ride -- and one that I'm proud of."
Lott says President Bush "was very kind in his remarks" after
Lott notified him of his resignation. Mississippi's Republican
governor will name someone to temporarily replace Lott.
Lott was elected the Senate's Republican whip last year. That
was redemption after being ousted five years ago as the party's
Senate leader over comments some interpreted as support for
southern segregationist policies.
