"Never a dull moment," Frank Hauf was just about ready for bed, "We just saw a huge explosion right in the middle of the yard . First we thought it was a transformer but I don't have a transformer."
Lightning struck a tree near the home. "The house was filling up with smoke and as we were standing over here the siding started burning," says Hauf pointing to his back porch.
It knocked electrical sockets out of the wall, blew through molding and melted the aluminum around the windows.
The lightning strike traveled down a tree to a cable connected to the back porch, giving the lightning a direct path to the house.
Fire Chief Gib Hixson with the Marlow-Fish River Volunteer Fire Department answered the call. "The house was damaged wiring primarily. One corner of the home was on fire and we got that out. We had to open up part of that side to make sure there wasn't any more fire."
"Maybe it won't happen again. They say lightning only strikes once," says Hauf who knows how lucky his family is, "they also say you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than winning the lottery so I checked my numbers last night, I didn't win."
Lightning also struck a house in the Barnwell community. Very little damage was reported.
