MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has approved a bill
that would prevent convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000
feet of a college or university.
Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living
within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools. The House
voted 103-0 today to approve the bill by Representative Jamie Ison
of Mobile to expand the current law to include colleges and
universities.
The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.
Ison said she hopes the bill will help protect young women
attending college.
Representative Thomas Jackson of Thomasville voted for the bill.
But he expressed concern that the Legislature keeps passing laws
restricting where convicted sex offenders can live or work.

Will be bill just keep them from LIVING near a campus, or will it also deny them the chance for a college education?
