MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A bill approved Wednesday by the House
Judiciary Committee would prevent convicted sex offenders from
living within 2,000 feet of a college or university.
Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living
within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools. The bill
by Representative Jamie Ison of Mobile would expand that law to
include colleges and universities.
Ison sauys she hopes the bill would protect young female college
students. She says she decided to introduce the bill after reading
about two young women who were assaulted on a college campus.
Ison says the bill would not prohibit convicted sex offenders
from attending a college or university. But they would not be able
to live on campus.
The bill passed on a voice vote and now goes to the full House
for debate. An identical bill has been approved by the Senate
Education Committee and is pending on the Senate calendar.
