Former President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn are in Alabama and Mississippi this week.
Mr. Carter says Habitat for Humanity is not a handout.
" Habitat is not a charity organization, it's a partnership with families who want to improve their own lives. All this week and for the past 25 years, we have worked side by side with the homeowner families."
This week is called the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter work project, but hundreds of volunteers will take part in the Gulf Coast building blitz.
Habitat for Humanity will be building this week in Pascagoula, Biloxi, Diamondhead, New Orleans and Mobile.
President Carter had a lot to say Monday morning at the Habitat site in Pascagoula.
He talked about his mother's commitment to help others in Georgia and around the world.
He shared his Christian faith and how it impacts many families helped by Habitat for Humanity.
President Carter even highlighted some of his wife's carpentry skills.
