Alabama lawmakers in the senate insurance committee unanimously approved two bills that could bring relief.
"My own home flooded in the hurricane. I have a sensitivity to this issue as a man, as a person well beyond the sensitivity I have as a senator," said Sen. Ben Brooks, (R) Mobile.
Brooks sponsored the legislation, which he says will help bring insurance affordability and availability back to south Alabama.
"Make no mistake about it, the bills are not going to reduce rates over night," said Brooks. "The idea is that by encouraging the return of market forces, prices will moderate over time."
Angie Broom, a mobile mother of three, drove to Montgomery for Wednesday's committee meeting. Brooks introduced Broom to the committee as a representative of thousands of Gulf Coast homeowners.
"I wanted you to see a face with the problem," he told the committee.
Broom and her husband were forced to sell their home last summer after they were dropped by the insurance company.
"I hope this will help the southern communities," Broom said. "I know it's not going to solve the problem."
The two bills, SB-03 and SB-05, will now be scheduled for a full senate debate. Brooks says it may face opposition from some lawmakers and insurance industry insiders.
