Frederic originated as a tropical wave which moved off the west coast of Africa late on August 27, 1979, and became a tropical depression at 0600 (GMT) on August 29. Moving westward with a steady forward speed of 18 knots, it strengthened into Tropical Storm Frederic at 1200 (GMT) on August 30 and was further upgraded to a hurricane at 0600 (GMT) on September 1, while centered approximately 650 miles (1045 km) east of the Lesser Antilles.

Although conditions were initially very favorable for significant intensification, Frederic began to experience the outflow of Hurricane David (which had greatly intensified in the same area just days before). Subsequently, Frederic began a weakening trend early on September 2, when it weakened back to tropical storm status: this weakening trend would continue for several days as the storm followed in David's wake. Frederic passed over Puerto Rico and approached the Dominican Republic, then suddenly turned northwest during the afternoon of September 5 (just as David had done before): it passed just west of Santo Domingo on September 6. Further weakening caused Frederic to drop below tropical storm strength later on the 6th just north of Haiti.

Continuing westward, Frederic crossed southeastern Cuba before paralleling the island's southern coast for the next four days. During this period, Frederic eventually escaped the unfavorable conditions left behind by David and regained tropical storm strength 100 miles (160 km) east of Cuba's Isle of Pines at about 0000 (GMT) on September 9. A turn towards the northwest followed, and Frederic became a hurricane once more near 1200 (GMT) on September 10, as it moved away from the western tip of Cuba. Frederic achieved this despite its center of circulation remaining close to land, probably because of sea surface temperatures of 29-30C and favorable upper-level conditions due to the presence of a large anticyclone at 200mb over the storm.

Frederic continued to intensify as it moved into the Gulf Of Mexico, reaching peak intensity on 1200 (GMT) on September 12: at this time, Frederic had maximum sustained winds of 135 mph (215 km/h) and a central pressure of 943 mb (HPa), making a Category 4 hurricane.

Frederic weakened slightly before it made landfall on Dauphin Island, Alabama at 0300 (GMT) on September 13. Sustained winds were estimated at 125 mph, making Frederic a strong Category 3 hurricane at the time. The central pressure at the time was 946 mb. Landfall on the mainland occurred about an hour later near the Mississippi state line.

Moving inland, Frederic turned north and northeast and was downgraded to a tropical storm near Meridian, Mississippi. Frederic became extratropical in southwestern Pennsylvania as it merged with a frontal low in at about 1200 (GMT) on September 14, and moved rapidly northeastward before dissipating.

claycity, i think you should try another company.  you should get replacement cost. there are some pretty good insurance companies out there. i only lost l tree but my adjuster was talking about cleaning the debris around my house like limbs and everything. i think they pay so much for that.

rose:
no i evidently didint. my lot is so big (Not really but according to them,  its only 5 acres) and so few of the trees were endangering the house, only two actually fell on it that they filed a claim but it didint meet my deductable. they said only if the trees endangered the structure would they remove them. my house was built in 79 for about 80k but i coudlnt replace it for that and that doesnt include the contents. i dont face the risk of flooding i am on the high side of fish river north of 32 but all my south neighbors got 18k grants to elevate thier houses.and i thought i had great coverage (Old USAA, not the new one that insures all the military the select original group) but now have resigned myself to the fact that i am pretty much on my own and will only get a payout with a total loss of structure, and it wil be minimal. dropping the wind and hail coverage this year really scares me.

yes carl, i think so. somebody has to profiting by all these bank closings. wonder what really is going on. i do not think its just the housing market. i am starting to smell a rat.

Recon that’s gonna be the death notice for many more people’s policies ?

claycity, didnt you have coverage to clean up? i mean like fallen limbs trees etc., we did and they used that to apply to our deductable. i think sometimes it just depends on the adjuster you get. wether they had a good lunch or a bad lunch. we tried to get a government loan for the store and it was loaded down with so much paper work it was unreal. now i hear in texas it is not going to be that bad.

here you go carl, i just found this on the black monday article.

The world’s largest insurance company plans to
announce a major restructuring Monday.

ivan was the worst for me since frederick. i lost over 100 trees on my lot, it took nearly three years of unassisted work and thousands (Well maybe only three or four thousand) to get my lot cleaned up and clear. i got no assistance from fema financially and my hurricane deductable didint cover my structural damage. i am left with about 100 trees on my lot and daily i discover more that the tap root snapped on and they are waiting on a strong wind to topple them. and yet i continue to live here while my coverage goes down and the premiums go up. what am i thinking.

yes carl, i agree. insurance is going to go up for sure now.

i would give these looters a paid vacation. i would send them to saui arabia with a sign around their neck that reads “ i steal”

I have never seen so many trees down as in Fredrick. The strong winds seem to have been lower to the ground than other hurricanes and I credited the trees for saving many lives, acting as wind breaks. I had damage but nothing serious and a few big trees down. Now I worry more about damage after being priced out of home owner’s insurance. Boy,the insurance company sure walked away grinning like a horse eating briers after pushing me out the door after paying premiums for about 42 years.
