MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A House committee has voted to make
changes to Alabama's tax system that would remove the state sales
tax on groceries.
The bill approved by the House Government Appropriations
Committee Wednesday would also remove the current deduction that is
allowed for federal income tax payments. The bill would also give
every state person, including children, an automatic $2,200
standard deduction.
The sponsor, Rep. John Knight of Montgomery, said the proposed change would mean that people with low incomes would get a tax break. He said only families earning more than $100,000 would pay higher taxes.
Several committee members disagreed and argued the change would
raise taxes for most families.
The bill would remove the state's 4 cent tax on food. It goes to
the full House for debate.
