the Gulf Coast by false job promises after Hurricane Katrina
complained today in Washington.
They demanded that their ambassador help stop what they call
human trafficking.
The workers say more than 500 Indian nationals paid recruiters
$20,000 each after they were promised permanent U.S. residency to
work for Signal International.
Signal is an oil rig construction and repair company.
Instead, they say they got ten-month guest-worker visas and
faced inhumane living conditions at company facilities in
Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Orange, Texas.
They sued Signal earlier this month.
Signal has denied allegations of mistreatment and says it will
stop hiring guest workers until more is done to prevent recruiting
abuses.
Signal also severed its contract with recruiter Global Resources
and plans to sue the firm.
