Lucky Lab Brew Pub in Portland, Oregon recently installed a solar thermal system to brew their beer. Solar panels are on the pub's roof and the energy gathered from the sun heats the water used in making beer. The energy also heats the water needed for dishwashers and bathrooms.
When it's cloudy in Oregon, the brewery has a traditional water heater as a backup. However, the owner says even on cloudy days the water gets as warm as 145-degrees.
The upfront cost of the system was about 70-thousand dollars. The owner says the system is expected to pay for itself in just a few years, as well as provide energy savings for years after that.
Lucky Lab says they plan to brew a special "Sun Beer" to celebration their new solar system.
The brewery is one of only a handful of breweries across the U.S. that uses alternative energy to meet its needs.
