Cars that drive themselves are "not science fiction" and could
be for sale within a decade, according to a vice president at
General Motors. He says much of the technology already exists.
But there are significant issues to settle first. Concerns about
government regulation, liability laws and privacy could all put
driverless cars in the slow lane.
A Defense Department contest, which involved 35 teams, showed
the technology isn't ready for prime time. One team was eliminated
after its driverless vehicle nearly charged into a building, while
another vehicle mysteriously pulled into a house's carport and
parked itself.
GM's chief executive will talk about driverless cars in a speech
tomorrow at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
