imagine paying for gas you don't get.
Some alert consumers have noticed it over the years -- A pump
that seems to hesitate a second when the lever is squeezed.
Anywhere from 2 to 6 cents tick off before the rush of gasoline
starts. That's what happens with a common, hard to diagnose problem
with the "check valve." The valve is supposed to make sure gas
flows at the same time the meter starts.
But even if your gas pump works, it can still be off as much as
five dollars for a fill up. Federal regulators say they've heard of
swings of as much as 30 to 40 cents per gallon.
Here in Florida, the Department of Agriculture is responsible
for inspecting gas pumps. A department spokesman says retailers in
the state have a good track record when it comes to the credibility
of their gas pumps.

This frontier town five hours north of Edmonton is the gateway to the Athabaska Oil Sands, the second-largest proven oil reserve in the world. With $100-a-barrel oil making its costly extraction from the tar sands profitable, crude exports to the U.S. have spiked to record highs - and the exploding industry has drawn some 20,000 fortune hunters since 2005, pushing rents into the stratosphere. One-bedrooms average $2,200; some are predicting that will soon climb to $3,500. Vacancies are rare, and landlords can name their price, often for apartments in rundown buildings with moldy interiors.
