WASHINGTON (AP) - Are you a parent who thinks it's hard for
schools to get bad teachers out of the classroom? A new survey says
there are teachers who would agree with you.
More than half of teachers polled believe it's too difficult to
weed out ineffective teachers who have tenure. Nearly half say they
personally know such a teacher.
The findings are in a survey released by the Education Sector, a
nonpartisan think tank.
Tenure provides teachers with job security and generally is
awarded a few years after educators enter the profession. It's
supposed to ensure that teachers can't be fired at the whim of a
principal or angry parent.
But it also can make it extremely difficult to dismiss a teacher
who is doing a bad job.
According to the survey, a majority of teachers think the
evaluation process for new teachers should be strengthened, so that
weak teachers don't become entrenched.

Well let’s face it some of them are there for a paycheck and all that time off that they get.  I don’t believe in tenure some people get worse with time.  They need to be evaluated every year.  I am 44 years old and I went to Grand Bay Elementary.  I will never forget Ms. Winn.  If you forgot your pencil she would tell you the next time you forgot it she was going to cut your finger and make you write with blood.  But, of course who was going to listen she was “the teacher”.  She would yell at you at the top of her lungs.  But, there are some very good teachers out there and whether you have been teaching 1 year or 30 the rules should be the same.

There are a few bad teachers at Theodore High School.  ROTC having a few and a math teacher. I would like to know where a parent can find help with teachers abusing and harrasing students. The schools are going to protect the teachers but as parents we need to find someone who will stand behind the kids and get in there and investigate some of these teachers cursing at kids and pusing these kids around and trying to make kids feel about as tall as an ant. what happened to teachers giving a crap about teaching and caring about the kids?

There is/was an English teacher at MGM High School, that was just horrible. Not only would she would single out students and purposefully embarrass them, she would tell the whole class each student’s grade, and seat them in her classroom according to their grade.  Once I pulled her aside, and told her I was uncomfortable with her practices, and I’ll never forget her response. “So what? I have tenure, you can’t do jack about it.”

As a former school board member I agree.  Until the AEA has true reforms then education in Alabama will all ways suffer.  I am proud of the teachers who work hard and go above and beyond, they are to be commended.  We do not have many bad teachers, but when you do, you are stuck. It cost to much money to tackle the AEA and then still lose in arbitration.  Top that off with an anti-religion agenda in education then it is no wonder that home schooling and private schools are growing.

Good story and very true.  Also, how about bad principals?  I’ve seen some very good and very bad in the last few years.  The bad ones are allowed to basically terrorize students, teachers and any parent who won’t stand up to them.  The school board places/promotes them and won’t admit they made a mistake until there’s a public controversy or worse like at Saraland Elementary in 2005.  I’ve witnessed a principal yell at kids, call them names and loose their cool in front of students which shows they don’t have what it takes.  Principals should be calm, collective and in control.  They should wield justice without anger and lead by example. That’s what attracts good teachers.
