Over the last two months, thieves have stolen more than $14,000 worth of diesel fuel from the Wade Quick Stop on Highway 63 in Jackson County, Mississippi.
Store Manager Wesley Allbritain says the thieves break into the fuel pump after hours and somehow manipulate a computer board which operates the pump.
One of the biggest thefts involved two 18 wheelers, which pulled up to the pump at the same time. Together the drivers managed to get away with 400 gallons of fuel.
"Folks at these gas stations have got to realize gasoline and diesel fuel is like gold now," said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.
In the last week, the Wade Quick Stop has installed a security switch inside their diesel pump, which Allbritain says makes it impossible for a theif to override. Allbritain says since the switch was installed, at least one person has attempted to steal fuel. The attempted burglary was caught on camera.
If the thieves are caught, Sheriff Byrd says they could be charged with grand larceny and commercial burglary, each charge carries up to five years in prison.
