"The federal government is really making it tough for us to make a living," says Ivie. "I'm trying to raise a family, charter boating fishing and red snapper are our bread and butter, we've staked our name on it and now they're pulling the rug out from under us."
Ivie is talking about new red snapper regulations implemented by the federal government. The 2008 red snapper season has been cut over 70 days and a two fish per person daily bag limit has been implemented. The 2007 season ran from April 21st through October 31st....this year's season has been cut from a June 1st opening day to September 30th.
"That was huge," says Capt. Fitz who operates Zeke's Marina in Orange Beach. "When you go and lose one-third of your fishing time and you lose half the fish you can catch, it's a very significant blow."
