(Monday) received a Profile in Courage award for promoting racial
equality and educational opportunity in his state.
In accepting the award for his lifetime of work, he lamented a lack of emphasis now being put on civic learning, and said that could be a "fatal flaw" in the capacity of future leaders to lead.Winter says without a knowledge of what has transpired before,
people could fall into the trap of repeating the old mistakes and
ignoring the lessons that earlier generations paid to learn.
California Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Ohio Secretary of
State Jennifer Brunner were presented awards for challenging the
reliability of electronic voting systems.
The awards were presented at the John F. Kennedy Library in
Boston. The award is named for a 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book
written by John F. Kennedy.
