It is the site of one of the most famous battle of the Civil War and it survived, but Fort Morgan faces a bigger battle, the fight against time and so far, time is winning.
It has survived major wars and countless hurricanes but the years and the elements are taking their toll. At almost two hundred years old, Fort Morgan is showing her age. Blanton Blankenship manages the Fort and watching it deteriorate is tough, "It's almost like watching it die and we can't do anything about it."
For the second year in a row, it's listed as one of the most endangered historical sites in the country.
There are several reasons why Fort Morgan remains on the endangered list, like huge cracks in walls that are getting bigger, limestone that has oozed out of the mortar in brick walls are beginning to make walls of their own and in some places, bricks are disappearing, dissolving with time. It will take millions of dollars to correct the problems and get the fort off the list but people who visit here and the people that work here say it was worth it.
."There are definitely areas that are deteriorating."
Willie Shoulders is showing his granddaughter around, "You can tell it has withstood the true test of time but yet still needs to be some work done to preserve it."
The price tag for that work according to the Alabama Historical Commission would be around 21 million dollars.
"It's not going to get any better till somebody convinces the politicians in Montgomery that this is significant and needs to be preserved," says Blankenship.
The walls that helped protect a nation, now needs a little help and there is still hope it will get it.
"It's too big of a historic treasure to the country just to let it fall apart."
