EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) - An Air Force fighter pilot is
recovering in good condition this morning after his plane and
collided and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico during
a training exercise.
Both pilots ejected and were rescued, but one later died.
Air Force investigators are trying to determine what caused two fighter jets to collide during
a training exercise yesterday.
According to the squadron commander, the single-seat F-15C
Eagles were engaged in a training exercise that emphasized "basic
maneuvers and tactics" when they collided over the Gulf of Mexico
about 35 miles south of Tyndall Air Force Base in the Florida
Panhandle. Weather in the area was clear at the time.
The Air Force grounded all of its F-15s after the catastrophic
failure of an F-15C during a routine training flight in Missouri in
November. Most were back in service by January, but others have
been grounded indefinitely after defects were found.
