NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A FEMA spokesman says the agency will try to
work with New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin to address his concerns about
a plan to move people from government-issue trailers.
Nagin said in a letter to President Bush that there isn't enough
housing available in the region to accommodate those who need to be
moved.
There are concerns about formaldehyde fumes in the trailers, but
Nagin says the plan to relocate those people will lead to a
"second great displacement" of New Orleans residents.
The FEMA spokesman says the agency had not received an official
copy of the letter, but would work to address his concerns within
its "legal authorities."
Nagin writes that while he agrees the situation is urgent,
moving families to apartments or hotels isn't an appropriate
solution.
