Arthur Dye Junior keeps fit. So far, this 71 year old has not had a problem with falls. But as he ages, he worries a fall could be the thing that might cost him his independence.
Mr. Dye explains, "If you were to fall and have a serious injury then, someone would have to take care of you and that's a pretty uncomfortable thought."
Arthur was on of more than two thousand senior men who recently took part in a men's health study. Participants were tested for physical performance at the beginning of the study. Then, over a four year period were seen every four months. They self-reported falls during these visits.
Lynn Marshall is an Epidemiologist.
Researchers found that the lower level of testosterone, the greater risks.
The study did not show how testosterone was related to falling. Still, the results strongly suggest more study is needed in the area of hormone replacement therapy for men.
Arthur is doing his part to avoid falls, hoping to preserve his independence for many, many years.
