An escaped Escambia County convict was free less than 24 hours and caught only two blocks from the jail but it wasn't the cops that got him.
Shattered glass marks the spot where Matt Kaiser's brand new truck was sitting when he came to pick it up last night. "I opened the door, sat in the truck and saw something unfamiliar in the back."
That unfamiliar lump was escaped convict Kent Cooper. "There was some words," says Kaiser, "some actions taken and I ended up calling the sheriff's department."
Cooper is no stranger to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's spokesman Glenn Austin says Kaiser is lucky he wasn't hurt. "When he got a hold of this man and if he knew he was as desperate he may have been thinking, I shouldn't have done this."
Cooper broke into three vehicles before settling into Kaisers for the night. He trashed them all.
"I was a little worried he obviously had a knife but I knew I could handle him and somebody's got to do it. He might have done it to someone else's stuff tonight."
Tonight when Cooper goes to sleep he'll be in a familiar place, the Escambia County Jail.
