Escambia County Florida School System Superintendent Jim Paul says the school system needs to cut 12 million from their budget by this fall.
The School Board discussed a list of non-teaching positions that many school board members say will not affect classrooms, but will save money."It's what's best for the children and how far we can make these cuts away from the classroom. So we're going to have to get some tough skin and do what we have to do,"Said school board member Claudia Brown-Curry. School board members went over a list of almost fifty jobs on the school system's Personnel Planning Document at tonight's board meeting. The jobs range from bus drivers to assistant superintendents. Paul says the proposed cuts, will help the school system's budget in the long run. "The wheels are not going to fall off it may not run so pretty any more. But we're going to make sure our children are safe and sound in air conditioned rooms, in buses that get them to school and they're going to be fine,"Said Paul.
The proposal comes a week after the school board approved cutting 115 teaching jobs. The Escambia County School Board will hold a workshop May 15th to go over more details of the proposal. Board members hope to come to a decision at their next meeting May 20th.
