BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A new scam has surfaced that has caught
the attention of the Internal Revenue Service. The tax agency said
there are individuals who are targeting elderly citizens in west
Alabama counties.
Citizens need be wary of people who claim they can secure a tax
refund by using Social Security retirement or disability benefits
as taxable income.
According to IRS spokesman Dan Boone in Birmingham, retirement
or disability benefits CANNOT be used to generate a tax refund. He
said such a claim could result in either a stiff fine, a prison
sentence or both.
Boone said the scam is being operated mainly in Choctaw, Lamar,
Perry, Sumter and Washington counties, but has directly affected
others in ten other counties - mostly in Black Belt counties.
The IRS maintains an updated list of the most common tax scams,
called "The Dirty Dozen."
