SB-03 and SB-05 have faced tough opposition by some in the insurance industry, and despite being approved by state senators Thursday, they could both die in the House of Representatives without ever being brought up for a vote.
The measures, which were written by Senator Ben Brooks (R-Mobile), are assigned to the House Banking and Insurance Committee. Brooks tells News Five committee members have until Wednesday to approve the bills or they cannot be sent to the House floor for a vote by all representatives.
A group of Mobile and Baldwin County lawmakers met Monday morning to discuss a strategy for keeping the bills alive. According to Brooks, Insurance Committee Chairman Lesley Vance (D-Lee, Russell) said he does not plan to bring either bill up for a vote, essentially killing the measures. Instead, Vance is expected to bring up a separate insurance reform bill written by a North Alabama senator. Brooks has publicly said the bill written by Sen. Roger Bedford (D) is supported by special interest groups and does little to help residents on the Gulf Coast. News Five's calls to Vance were not returned Monday.
