An Okaloosa County daycare owner shot himself as detectives entered the building to investigate child abuse allegations. Community Relations Coordinator Catherine Rodriguez says investigators with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Patti’s Day Care on Green Acres Road at around 10am Thursday. The search warrant was a joint child abuse investigation with Florida's Department of Children and Families. Rodriguez says six children inside the daycare were removed to another location. Police attempted to communicate with 51-year-old Jan Ritchie, who had locked himself inside a bathroom. As investigators were speaking with Ritchie, they heard a gunshot. Ritchie was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Rodriguez says no children or other daycare workers were injured. DCF contacted parents after removing the children from the daycare.
