SEATTLE (AP) - The Dalai Lama is making his first visit to the
United States since the recent outbreak of turmoil in his native
Tibet.
The exiled spiritual leader is due to arrive in Seattle today to
attend a conference. Organizers of the five-day Seeds of Compassion
conference say the Dalai Lama's visit is expected to draw more than
150,000 people. Tickets for events involving him are sold out.
The start of the visit comes a day after pro-Tibetan
demonstrators turned out to protest the Olympic torch relay in San
Francisco.
China accuses the Dalai Lama of fomenting rebellion against
Chinese rule in Tibet.
President Bush yesterday urged Beijing to reach out to the
exiled Tibetan leader to find a solution.
The Dalai Lama's six-day U.S. visit includes a speaking
engagement at the University of Michigan.
