BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Four teens were killed today in a
collision involving a FedEx Freight tractor-trailer and a Pontiac
convertible driving in reverse on Interstate 459 in Birmingham.
The impact pushed the convertible across the interstate and into
the median barrier. State trooper Sgt. Eddie Dodgen says for some
reason the driver of the car was backing down the interstate in the
right lane.
The Jefferson County Coroner's office said the victims were two
18-year-old males, and two sisters, who were 14 and 17. All four
were pulled from the wreckage of the convertible. The FedEx driver
was not hurt.
Names of the victims are not yet available.
At FedEx headquarters in Memphis, spokeswoman Sally Davenport
says the company is "still gathering details" about the crash
while cooperating with accident investigators. She says the
company's "thoughts and prayers" go out to the crash victims.
Davenport says the FedEx Freight driver was based in Atlanta,
but she did not immediately know his destination.
The accident happened just after 11 a.m.
