The basilica, built over the crypt where Christians believe Jesus was born, is administered jointly by Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic authorities.
On Tuesday, Christian pilgrims from around the world filled the church in the West Bank town to celebrate Christmas.
Dozens of priests and cleaners came to the church on Thursday to scrub and sweep the floors, getting ready for the Armenian and Orthodox holidays which are celebrated the first week of January. Palestinian police, armed with batons and shields, quickly broke up the Christian catfight.
Four people were wounded.
