the Chicago River a deep shade of Irish green.
Thousands jammed the riverfront in downtown on Saturday (3/15) to watch the
magical event. A secret orange dye was dumped out of the back of a speedboat
and within seconds a stretch of the famous river turned green.
The annual tradition dates back to 1962 when 100 pounds of dye turned the
river green for a week. This year only 25 pounds was used and the water is
expected to stay green for a little more than a day.
The dye goes into the river between Columbus Drive and Michigan Avenue but
usually floats downstream several blocks.
