DALLAS (AP) - A Southwest Airlines passenger got an unwelcome
reception in Dallas after allegedly giving the crew a hard time
about using his cell phone.
Officials say that when the man refused to get off his cell
phone during the flight, Southwest officials summoned police, who
met the jet at Love Field. Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King says
flight attendants had repeatedly asked the man to get off the phone
while airborne.
Police say Joe David Jones of Austin, was cited for disorderly
conduct.
The call apparently involved cardiac care for Jones' critically
ill father. A business associate says the nature of the call was
life and death.
The Federal Aviation Administration bars use of mobile phones
when planes are flying due to concerns about interference with
navigation systems.

As I originally said it’s a load of crap, however, you still don’t go aboard a airplane, and not abide by the rules. I’m really surprised that he wasn’t greeted with guns and tanks. In todays world, a airport is the last place you wanna find yourself causing a scene. They don’t really have a sense of humor there anymore, and personally, I can’t blame them. It’s for everyones good.

Never mind, I googled it. No scientific evidence, the FAA based their descision on heresay. What could possibly happen. At least you don’t have to listen to a loud mouth talking on the phone for a couple of hours!

Just out of curiousity can you recall who wrote the article? I worked at Boeing for a few years routing and protecting wire bundles from EMI. The cell phone signals are also broadcast outside the plane, where the antennas are.

Sorry atbman, It’s a load of crap. I read an article a couple months ago that reported that testing has shown that cell phones do not interfere with any aircraft devices. The researchers couldn’t get cell phones to affect anything. As far as nav devices go, the antennas are outside the plane, which further shield them from passenger cell phones, even if they were an issue. I guess if you held a cell phone held up next to the compass, it would make a difference, but if the pilot’s “using” a compass, it must be 1945 and cell phones don’t exist yet. HA! Here’s to Celestial Navigation.

No it is not quite a load of crap. The planes cables are shielded and protected, but the planes are not being inspected as they should be. Planes had to be grounded due to excess chafing on the wire bundles. If the shields are worn through or defective, it could conceivably send it could interfer with landing and take off equipment.( VOR, ILS, comms etc.)

“ The Federal Aviation Administration bars use of mobile phones
when planes are flying due to concerns about interference with
navigation systems.” That’s a load of crap. They ban the use of cellphones, so you’ll use their “in-flight” phones, and be forced to pay the extremely outrageous costs associated with the use of their phones.
