(AP) - He couldn't get elected president -- but StephenColbert has been voted the AP Celebrity of the Year.
The votes came from newspaper editors and broadcast producers
who decided that Colbert had the biggest impact on pop culture in
2007.
The mock pundit on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" put
together an ill-fated run for president -- he couldn't get on the
ballot in his home state of South Carolina. And his show went
0-for-4 at the Emmys, including an especially painful loss to Tony
Bennett.
But his book, called "I Am America And So Can You" topped the
best-seller lists.
And in the Celebrity of the Year balloting, he finished just
ahead of another author -- Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. The
final book in the series came out this year.
Finishing third was Al Gore -- who'll have to settle for an
Oscar, an Emmy and a Nobel Peace Prize.
Voting was otherwise spread out across many entertainers,
including Britney Spears, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus,
rapper Kanye West, comedy director and producer Judd Apatow and
country singer Kenny Chesney.
In an e-mail, Colbert said he was pleased to be chosen ahead of
"two great spinners of fantasy," as he described them -- J.K.
Rowling and Al Gore.
