Holmes killed himself in front of classmates Thursday.
Several dozen people gathered outside the school to pray for Holmes and talk about how they will remember him.
Holmes friend, Michael Daye said, "He was someone that you loved. Nothing bad came out of him besides what he did, but he was going through hard times. Nobody knows about that, so you can't criticize him for what he did."
Alicia Cox says she was Holmes' girlfriend and that they were planning to get married.
Cox said, "He didn't come to school to hurt no one. He was planning on going to the Marines and going to college to be an engineer. He had a future and a life on his hands and he was a loving boyfriend."
Organizer Lorenzo Martin says its important for young people to have a chance to speak about this tragedy.
Martin says, "If you do not give them ways of expressing themselves and their concerns, you're going to end up with another problem before the weekend is out."
Other vigils for Holmes are scheduled at the school this weekend.
