government to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mails.
Bush is holding his annual meeting with the governors today at
the White House, and opened the meeting with the issue of terrorist
surveillance.
The White House wants the House to act on a law that's already
been passed by the Senate, which protects telecommunications
companies that provide records to the government from lawsuits.
Bush says it's not fair that the companies are getting sued for
millions of dollars after doing something the government said was
necessary.
Democrats, in response, say the president is resorting to
"scare tactics and political games." In an op-ed piece in the
Washington Post, lawmakers say Bush and his allies want the
American public to believe that Democrats have left the country
vulnerable to attack.
