Record high fuel costs are forcing Americans to put their summer vacations on hold. But if you're willing to leave the car at home, there are bargains you won't believe. Buses are picking up new customers and a ticket to ride can cost as little as a buck.

Greyhound and Peter Pan rolled out the Bolt Bus.

Another company, Megabus, says the $1 fares have helped it double the number of passengers in just a year. More routes will be added in late May.

Those bargains are pulling the industry out of a 50-year slump. Bus departures jumped about 13-percent in the last year. And passengers are finding all sorts of modern upgrades like free Wi-Fi, power outlets, more leg room, even flush toilets.

With million of Americans trying to budget their summer travels, the $1 Bus fares might just be the ticket.

i have long held the dream of winning a huge lottery.. and building a monorail system from the airport to the mall area..like the one at disney..electric..what a concept huh?
instead of wasting taxpayer monies on the ugly monstrosities and usless buildings downtown..why not put in something that more of the general public can really use..and get rid of those nasty smelly buses..not to mention fuel burning..maybe a couple wind turbines and solar cells to power it..
eventually run it all over town..what do you think? hmmmm…
