“You look at the caps, columns, the bearings and the deck,” says Chambless. He’s got to take a peak at every connecting point of the bridge. Depending on the size of the bridge, an inspection could take an hour. Every bridge is required to be inspected every two years. This bridge was built in 2002 and is getting its third inspection.
“We use traffic control if we have to, we'll close a lane,” says Chambless. “When the traffic is very high and very fast, we'll get state troopers to help us.” The learning doesn’t stop for inspectors. Chambless says they’re required to take a “refresher” course every two years.
