An early morning brawl at Murphy High School ended with the arrests of four female students and a teacher injured.
Police got the call around 7 o'clock Wednesday morning. Two twin sisters, Dykeshia and Dyneshia Harris, grabbed broomsticks and started fighting a 14-year-old and 16-year-old girl who were armed with a glass bottle and a ceramic piggy bank. When a male teacher tried to break up the brawl, police say the Harris sisters started hitting the teacher with the broomsticks.
Paramedics had to put stitches behind Dykeshia's left ear. Two other girls and the teacher were also treated for minor injuries.
The Harris twins are charged with 2nd degree assault and disorderly conduct. They will be tried as adults.
Last year, their brother Dominick, was arrested for using his cell phone to record a classmate punching a teacher in the face. Earlier this month, he was arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting.
The 14-year-old girl involved in the fight is also charged with 2nd degree assault and disorderly conduct. She and the 16-year-old were taken to the Strickland Youth Center.
News 5 will have more on this story tonight on News 5 at 5:00 & 6:00.

I would like to see charge brought against the parents of these kids too?  What happened to holding parents responsible for kids actions?  The parents here are probally part of the problem.

In the scenario of defending one’s self over lunch money, that is not what happened here.

These students BEAT a teacher with a BROOMSTICK. For anyone, regardless of age, to do something like this is, in my opinion, inexcusable. Even in the best defense for these girls that they perhaps lost their tempers, I still don’t believe that they, or anyone else who commits a similar offense, should get off with just counseling.

Their own brother is the PERFECT example of why they should be tried as adults. He was given a plea bargain to get a lesser, juvenile sentence. Not a year later he is in jail AGAIN for being involved with a drive-by shooting. A lot of good that did, eh?

My opinion has nothing to do with the news coverage. It has to do with how appalled I am that children can ASSAULT a TEACHER and the public says, “Aw, those poor misunderstood kids. Let’s spend our tax dollars to put them in counseling.” Whatever happened to hard love?

I think we’ve forgotten was PRISON’S are there for...it’s the last stop...the last chance, the place we send those that have comitted the kinds of crime that warrant such a conviction. Are you telling me that a kid punching his teacher didn’t deserve counseling first, juvenile detention, boot camp, or even house arrest before PRISON??? it’s THE STORY to get ratings right now and they’re playing it up for everything its worth… and you’re buying into it...until one of your kids , or grandkids does something stupid and has to be sent away with hard core criminals and rapists… and yes Murphy IS going downhill-my little brother said that there are kids who come up to others and demand their lunch or juice and you better give it them or else, what happens when he defends himself,PRISON?...truely sad!

I do not agree we are too quick to try kids as adults, especially in this case. In fact I think it is the perfect thing to do! Hopefully after this they will learn their lesson and won’t do anything like this again. I agree it is unfortunate adults get away with worse crimes, but that doesn’t mean we should slack off in other areas because of it.

It’s hard enough to get and keep quality teachers, but they also have to be prepared to be punched or hit???  Sounds like the entire family is going to end up in jail.  They should never be allowed to return to school.  If you assault a teacher, that’s enough.
I also would like to comment on Murphy HS.  I live in the area and it seems like there are no rules that are enforced.  Kids are constantly leaving campus, going onto our side streets and into our yards.  I’ve had a few hiding behind my privacy fence smoking pot.  If the security issues are not taken care of, Murphy’s reputation and surrounding neighborhoods are going to suffer.

tsk tsk… i can’t believe how many parents out there are so quick to try kids (of any age lately) as adults for any and every thing they do now...3 yrs for for punching a teacher??? Of course he should’ve been punished… but, there are actual adults out there getting into drunken fist fights every weekend at the clubs downtown and I can assure you they sat one night in jail ( to sober up) and let go...will probably pay a fine and some doctor bills and sent on their way. Adults with several DUI’s still not in jail and child molestors register and move in right next door… fights at our precious Mardi Gras rarely end up in prison. I did loss prevention before and I saw a kid (charged with theft of property, with felony amounts of drugs in his vehicle and much more) get a slap on the wrists. I thought about moving my son to private a school but, i’ve been told by a friend that drugs are very bad there as well (ask any private school kids they’ll tell you)… but, never on TV.

There is obviously a very serious problem with violence in this family as clearly demonstarted by these two girls as well as their brother, Dominick. (he was also involved in a drive by shooting) All three have been involved with incidents IN SCHOOL that involve a teacher being violently injured. I think Fred Richardson should also be held responsible to some degree since he insisted that these criminals remain on campus. I don’t have children, but if I were a parent whose child went to this school, I would DEMAND a PUBLIC EXPLANATION from Fred Richardson as to WHY these criminals were given special treatment and allowed to endanger the well being of my child. As for these kids who are commiting ADULT crimes...TRY THEM AS ADULTS! It’s that simple. That is part of the problem today...there is no punishment for these “child criminals” so they simply grow into ADULT CRIMINALS...and instead of beating someone with a stick, they shoot you with a gun.

I think ANYONE should be able to bring charges of assault whether the victim is a teacher or another student. Perhaps some fines and a nice stay behind bars would help teach some lessons. Who are the judges giving second chances?  Don’t vote them in.

I think Mr.Richarson is standing on one foot now and trying to balance on his toes,he shouldn’t last long now unless all the people in his district are deaf and blind and i don’t believe that.
