PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - Opening statements start today in the
trial of eight people charged in the death of a teenager at a
Florida juvenile boot camp.
Seven former camp guards and a nurse are facing manslaughter
charges stemming from the 2006 incident. The guards were videotaped
hitting and kicking the 14-year-old inmate, who later died. The
camp nurse is accused of watching but doing nothing during most of
that 30-minute incident.
The NAACP is protesting the decision to hold the trial in Bay
County, as well as the selection of a mostly white jury. The teen
who died was black. The guards are white, black and Asian.
The court is across the street from the now-closed boot camp.
The guards and nurse face up to 30 years in prison each if
convicted of aggravated manslaughter of a child.
