A recent audit showed that some of the people who received pell grants and other types of financial aid were either not students or did not attend class.
Elston Turner, who is the school's women's basketball coach is facing two counts of theft by deception.
His attorney told news five his client is not guilty.
"He's spent his whole adult life dedicated to try to help young people both athletically and academically and turn them into good model citizens and for him to be dragged down here and humiliated like this is pretty reprehensible. But we're going to try to get what we can of his reputation back and we'll have to wait to see what the trial reflects but I think when it's all over with I fully expect him to be exonerated," said Turner's attorney Daniel Mims.
The seven who appeared in court are just part of 13 people charged in this case.
The case now goes before a grand jury.
