man this morning after a fight broke out in a line outside a Best
Buy store in Malbis.
Spanish Fort Police Chief David Edgar said 27-year-old James
Meriwether was charged with third-degree assault. Edgar said
Meriwether allegedly punched a 23-year-old Fairhope man who was
trying to break up a fight between Meriwether and three young men
who were scalping Best Buy vouchers.
The Best Buy store had given the vouchers to people in the front
of the line. They guaranteed that the holder would be able to buy
certain deeply discounted items. The line of people waiting started
forming outside the store last night.
Witnesses in line said the scalpers were teenagers who had
vouchers for multiple items and were selling them for up to $100
apiece to people farther back in line.
