When Lister Robinson joined his neighborhood watch patrol he never imagined he'd be watching for bears.
"He cut out, and there was a bunch of trees going boom, boom, boom, boom," said Robinson describing the animal he saw trekking through the woods behind his West Mobile home.
Over the last couple days, several people have reported seeing a mama bear and her cub on Howell's Ferry Road near the Forest Acres subdivision. A Mobile police sergeant who was searching the area said he saw the bears, but they went into the woods when the officers showed up.
Sheryl Neighbors was driving a school bus when she spotted one of the bears Thursday morning.
"I want to say he was maybe 200 pounds or something," she said.
Officials at the Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries says the bears have not acted aggressively, so he doubts his officers will try to track them down. Instead, he just warns residents not to get between mama and her baby.
"The bear is probably just moving through the area finding opportunities for food," said Sharp.
Wildlife officials say if you live near the bear sightings it's important to make sure your trash or pet food is not where the animals can get to it.

MREMANN83 was correct, I did get side tracked a little and it’s easy to do when you read all the postings and try to respond to more than one in a single post. It’s like I joked BamaBob about, I must have been having a senior moment. Rosepetal don’t worry about the kittens, I’ll either keep them or give them a way. They’re about six weeks old now, black with white socks and a little spot of white on their chests. We have two more and I can’t even begin to tell you how we rescued this mama cat and her four kittens in the space allowed here and you wouldn’t believe it. Any way I saw there were two more black bears sightings, one in Florida and one in Mississippi. they’re having to forage around human neighborhoods for food as they get more confined. I guess I ought to either go over there or call and see if Lister has seen that one off Howells ferry road again. If she finds food she will be back.

yes you were mremann83 it sure had nothing to do with the latest bear sighting   but carl you are right, animal shelters will have to cut back its going to be really bad how old are the kittens i can ask around but its hard to find a good home for a kitten   i can put a sign up on the counter of the store you never know
but when i start seeing strange animal sightings it reminds me of the months leading to katrina i saw some unusual things could be they are moving to safer ground

That would be a very hard thing to do MREMANN83. to bring up a subject without something to do with petroleum products. From wild life to the birth of babies. I watched that program on the history channel or discovery channel last night and I was astonished . Petroleum has crept into all facets of our lives, food, medicine, and even the care of wild life. I agree that the animals are getting cornered and pushed further away from their hunting grounds because of the need for roads and housing. This is one of those things I think we badly need a compromise on,the need for roads and housing versus the needs of the wild life. Both sides would have to give up something, but I don’t know what would be acceptable to both ,and who could speak for the wild life?

I was NOT posting anything that was meant to be connected to Oil Drilling.

As I have said before, I’ve been called tree hugger, animal nut and a few other things I can’t print here but I know there has to be compromises worked out in anything. I find my self in a similar situation with animals. I guess every animal known to habitate Alabama has shown up here at one time or another, either sick ,injured or just needing to rest for a month or two, anyone needing kittens at this time? Let me make it short, I’m all for drilling or what ever necessary to relieve the plight the people are in on the oil problem as long as reasonable care is given to the environment and the same for roads and animal care. What is considered reasonable care for both should be decided by the vote of the citizens, not by politicians, tree huggers,or oil barons. This Nation is a democracy, let the majority vote of the people decide which path to take and not the radical elements on both sides. And again I say-anyone needing kittens ?

mremann83 nobody respects wildlife more than i do
i have adopted 5 cats keep them inside because they would be easy targets on the road i live on one someone threw out of a car as a kitten and a customer saw it and brought it to me i also have 2 dogs i rescued that gives me a total of 7 cats
4 dogs but now people have to come first in order to make a living to support a spinal cord injury husband and my animals not to mention my employees depend on me and i am in the fuel business so i say drill for the oil here respect the wildlife but save the families you can have both and for those who can afford it build those houses people need jobs

Well thats just what happens when us “supreme beings” take over 90% of the country. Animals have nowhere else to go. Its terribly sad. Highways cut animals off from food sources, from other animals to mate with. We are destroying our wildlife and NO one cares cuz we “have the power…“

about 2 weeks ago i saw one bear running down the outside of the coast guard base toward the front entrance on tanner williams rd   i wonder if there have been anymore bear sightings

Amen to that! Usually these black bears are not aggressive, unless they think you mean harm to their cub. I can remember mama having to go out in the back yard and run a few off on a few occasions by beating on a pan with a big wooden spoon when I was a kid and we lived out in the country. they need to catch them and release them in a safer enviroment, otherwise they will probably end up getting hit by a car or on some one’s floor as a rug.

they should try to relocate the bears   some idiot will try to hurt them
