When Lister Robinson joined his neighborhood watch patrol he never imagined he'd be watching for bears.
"He cut out, and there was a bunch of trees going boom, boom, boom, boom," said Robinson describing the animal he saw trekking through the woods behind his West Mobile home.
Over the last couple days, several people have reported seeing a mama bear and her cub on Howell's Ferry Road near the Forest Acres subdivision. A Mobile police sergeant who was searching the area said he saw the bears, but they went into the woods when the officers showed up.
Sheryl Neighbors was driving a school bus when she spotted one of the bears Thursday morning.
"I want to say he was maybe 200 pounds or something," she said.
Officials at the Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries says the bears have not acted aggressively, so he doubts his officers will try to track them down. Instead, he just warns residents not to get between mama and her baby.
"The bear is probably just moving through the area finding opportunities for food," said Sharp.
Wildlife officials say if you live near the bear sightings it's important to make sure your trash or pet food is not where the animals can get to it.

Take your mouse, click “home” and navigate elsewhere. I come over here to post something and Rosepetal feels the need to attack again.

You two get over your drama… its great to disagree but this bull #### has been going on for a week now.  I’m tired of reading it!

Rosepetal, do you actually read my posts? And on that same note, do you actually read what you write, after you write it? Because I cant understand where you make your connections. And i most certainly cannot understand the long, drawn out gibberish of a run on sentence. Im not trying to get personal, but its annoying having a message in my email box that says “Someone just responded to your message on WKRG.com”, and then I stop what Im doing, navigate to the page, only to read your gibberish.

Rosepetal, I just called to see if there were any more sightings of the Mama and bear cub off Howells ferry road and Lister said none other than one possibly of them crossing Howells Ferry seen by a motorist. He seems to think they would be seen less, now that they have a lot less of black berries to eat in that area. I’m left with the impression that they looked pretty skinny from lack of food. Mama bear just trying to get her and her cub some food, Bless their hearts, wish I could do more to help them.

HEY RMSEEK1234! The mixed blood Beagle is looking a little better. You can still count his ribs and see way to many bones and the young bull is about the same. Both of them are running loose more often now and maybe that’s why they look a little better. It’s so heart breaking when they come around looking for food and I try to throw them some bread over the fence. I can’t encourage them to come back because of these 5 cats that has taken up home here. They are cat killers and will try to eat them. They got my neighbor’s cat and it wasn’t a pretty site, but I guess they have to get what they can to survive. the animal control officers are a joke here. Last week when the two were running loose and after my neighbor’s other cat,she called them and a little while later they drove by while she was trying to stop them and tell them where the dogs were, and they just laughed and waved and kept on going. These owners shouldn’t be allowed to keep these dogs.

good luck carl with the kittens but i have always heard black bears are in far west mobile
in canada they work around the bears but still have problems with some at the dumps and have to relocate them i believe there is a dump on tanner williams rd it could be a draw to them as they are moving thru the area

Once again, Rosepetal is completely off the mark when trying to target what I was trying to say.

It amazes me that these bears are in such a populated area. The area on Howell’s Ferry is close to Moffett Rd. And by the Coast Guard base too?I live out Howell’s Ferry close to the lake and could see a bear here, maybe. After all, we have tons of deer and turkey-but that far in town?!I hope it stays out of traffic, for it’s sake and the drivers. It’s bad enough to hit or be hit by a deer, but a bear?!

Carl, how is the dog you were concerned about? Any help with the suggestions I gave you before? As to the kittens, try the vets offices, etc. SPCA has funds to help spay/neuter animals-call them and tell them you rescued the cat and she had kittens and see if they will pay for her to be spayed, and if they will take the kittens. They gave me a $20 voucher to go to Discount Spay and Neuter to fix a cat I rescued awhile back.

Wish I could help more, but my funds are depleted. I recently got 2 more rescue horses, and it ain’t cheap, but the rewards are definitely worth it.
